Algorithm Used

Periodic Annuity Due Compounding Algorithm

Mathematical Convention

A geometric progression compounding algorithm for recurrent cash inflows executed at the beginning of each calendar month (annuity due). Each monthly tranche compounds independently at periodic interest i = Rate / 12 over its individual residual holding period.

Key Algorithmic Conventions & Assumptions

Cash inflows deployed on the first day of each month (Annuity Due)
Continuous geometric reinvestment of returns without dividend leakage
Constant annualized return rate over the full compounding horizon

Mathematical Formula

Compound Interest on Annuity (SIP)

FV = P × [((1+i)^n - 1) / i] × (1+i)

The annuity due formula accounts for the immediate deployment of monthly contributions, multiplying by (1 + i) to reflect initial-day deposit timing.

Step-by-Step Calculation Walkthrough

1Convert annual return 12% to periodic monthly rate i = 12 / (12 × 100) = 0.010000.
2Determine total monthly installments n = 10 years × 12 = 120 payments.
3Calculate accumulated compound factor ((1 + i)^n - 1) / i = 230.0387.
4Multiply by monthly deposit P and annuity multiplier (1 + i) to reach final wealth: ₹58,08,477.
5Total wealth gained from compounding returns: ₹28,08,477.

Strategic Insights & Financial Takeaways

Power of Compounding: Your returns account for 48% of your final corpus, meaning returns surpass your actual out-of-pocket deposits.

Dollar-Cost Averaging: Investing monthly removes the need to time market peaks and valleys, steadily accumulating units at average prices.

Step-Up Advantage: Increasing your monthly SIP by just 10% each year can add up to 35-45% more wealth over the same duration.

About Systematic Investment Plans (SIP)

SIP allows you to invest a fixed amount regularly in mutual funds. It promotes financial discipline, automates savings, and harnesses the exponential power of compounding over long investment horizons.

Rupee Cost Averaging

Automatically buy more fund units when prices are down and fewer when prices are high.

Compounding Effect

Reinvested returns generate returns of their own, creating exponential curve growth over 10+ years.

Inflation Hedge

Equities historically beat inflation by 4-6% p.a., safeguarding your future purchasing power.

About the SIP Calculator

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) lets you invest a fixed amount in a mutual fund every month. This SIP calculator shows what those monthly instalments could grow to, splitting the result into the amount you invested and the returns compounding on top of it.

How this sip calculator works

  1. Enter your monthly investment amount, the return you expect each year, and how long you plan to stay invested.
  2. The calculator applies the standard SIP future value formula, compounding each instalment monthly for the time it stays invested.
  3. You get the total invested amount, the estimated returns and the final corpus, along with a year-by-year growth chart.

Frequently asked questions

How is SIP return calculated?
A SIP is a series of monthly investments, each compounding for a different length of time. The future value formula used is M = P × ({[1 + i]^n - 1} / i) × (1 + i), where P is the monthly instalment, i is the monthly rate of return (annual rate divided by 12) and n is the total number of instalments.
What return should I assume for a SIP?
Returns are not guaranteed and depend entirely on the fund you choose. Many investors model equity funds at 10-12% per year and debt funds at 6-7% as a planning assumption, but actual returns will vary year to year and can be negative over short periods.
Is a SIP better than a lumpsum investment?
Neither is universally better. A SIP spreads your entry across market levels, which reduces the risk of investing everything at a peak and suits money you earn monthly. A lumpsum puts the full amount to work immediately, which helps when markets rise steadily afterwards.
